Rattles and noise makers have been in existence seemingly forever. These popular toys ranged from hollow rattles filled with pebbles (2500 B.C.), to musical dolls on a stick and loud rattletraps. While quiet rattles were great entertainment for children, a noisemaker such as the Rattletrap would most often be used by adults on festive occasions such as New Year’s Eve or Charivaris (on wedding nights). It was also used in war as an alarm. The Jewish call this noisemaker a “Grogger” and use it in the festival of Purim.
