The
object of the game of Diablo is to keep the reel spinning on the string
and to see how high it can be tossed before being caught on the string
again. There are many tricks to master (as with the yoyo). It is made
of hard maple with a steel center rod.
The game has been known in China for centuries and was called "Flying Cone" when it came to England. By the 1700's it was so popular "that the sport was not confined to children but ladies and even persons of great eminence strove to excel in it often to the great risk of the glass and porcelain in parlors." It was popular in America in the early 1900's, where clubs were formed in which to compete.
Learning to spin a Diablo might be compared "to milking a cow for the first time. It feels unnatural somehow, and downright scary." But after you get the hang of it it'll be, oh, so easy. A favorite of jugglers.
