Marbles
is a time-tested game. The earliest marbles were made of fired clay - not
always perfectly round and easily broken, glass marbles replaced them quickly.
Marbles made of round knucklebones, wood, or stone were common in past times
and are quite unique and interesting to play with.
In days of old, children carried their marbles with them all the time. Boys
were often so serious about the game and played so often that they would
make a pad from a little piece of fur from an old coat and use it to pad
their knuckles when shooting.
